
Our April meeting was held on the 15th at the Joliet VFW hall. We would like to make the April
meeting our “traveling meeting.” We hope to hold the meeting at various locations throughout
the Chicagoland area. We would like to thank the members who traveled via the motor coach
and also those who made the trip on their own. We would especially like to thank
Tom Cody andRick Toolis
who prepared the meal we enjoyed that evening. The highlight of the evening was aperformance by the Pipes and Drums under the direction of

Over forty children and their parents attended the sports night. Chefs Toolis and Cody fed our
guest and everyone enjoyed their favorite beverage. Every child who attended received a gift and a
chance for our bicycle raffle. Our congratulations go out to the winners of the bicycles. We would
like to thank everyone who attended and the board members who helped with the event. We would

Bill Moriarty who secured a gift for each child who attended.The rib fest will be held on Monday, June 9th at the FOP Hall located at 1412 W. Washington
Blvd. The meeting will begin a 7PM and admission is $10.00 per person. BE PREPARED TO
SHOW YOUR 2008 MEMBERSHIP CARD. Parking is available in the credit union lot across
from the hall. We would like to thank the Chicago Patrolman’s Credit Union in advance for their
courtesy. Entertainment will be provided by the Larkin Brothers. We may also have a performance
by the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Dept. We will have a “split the
pot” raffle and will also be raffling off a portable DVD player.
The golf outing will be held on Monday, July 7th at Carriage Greens Country Club (http://www.carriagegreens.com).
The cost for this year’s outing is $125.00 per golfer or $500.00 per foursome. If you or someone you know
would like to sponsor a hole at the outing, or would like to make a donation for the outing, call

We have secured a permit for the picnic which will be held on Saturday July 26th at the
DesPlaines/Park Ridge Indian Boundary Woods Dam #4, 12 noon. It is located east of 294 between
Touhy and Devon Avenues, at Dee Rd. We will be serving your favorite grilled delights, cold Miller
Beer and soda for the wee folk. We will also have adult and children games. Music will be provided
by Dan “DJ” Mulligan and the commissary will be available for your shopping pleasure. We will
have a “split the pot” raffle which will include cash, beer and other prizes. The reason for the
change in location this year is due to renovations at Lions Woods. The cost is $10.00 per person or
$20.00 per car.
We are honored to announce our 2008 “Irishman of the Year” and “Police Officers of the
Year.” This year’s recipient of “Irishman of the Year” award will be William “Bill” Gainer of
Gainer Consulting. “Police Officers of the Year” awards will go to P.O. John Fitzgerald, Chicago
Police Department, P.O. Rick Trafton, Joliet Police Department and P.O. John Shortall , Chicago
Police Department. The annual Dinner Dance will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 at the
Holiday Inn Mart Plaza located at 350 N Orleans. Cocktails will be served at 7PM and dinner
at 8PM. Entertainment will include our very own Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society,
Chicago Police Dept, traditional Irish Dancers and music for your dancing pleasure. We will
have ticket and ad book information available on the website. Feel free to make copies of the
information and give them to anyone who might be interested in attending or advertising in the
ad book. Any member who places an ad in the ad book that is received by August 1st will receive
a gold page for the regular page price. Also our special raffle will be drawn and the lucky winners
will be announced at this event.

We have tickets for our “Special Raffle” that will be drawn at the dinner dance on Friday,
September 26th. We will only sell 400 tickets and will be giving away a total of $20,000 in
prizes. The price of the raffle ticket is $100.00. To secure your ticket send a check payable to
the Emerald Society of IL, to P.O. Box 557819, Chicago 60655 as soon as possible and note
“special raffle” in the memo section. You can also contact any board member for tickets. We will
mail your ticket after we receive your donation. With the limited amount of tickets being sold,
be sure to send your money in as soon as possible. We will also have tickets available on a first
come, first serve basis at all of our events and meetings. If anyone is interested in selling tickets,

Emerald Society Apparel
We would like to remind all of our members that when they are wearing Emerald Society
apparel that they are representing the Emerald Society of Illinois. Members are not allowed to
reproduce or design ANY apparel without the expressed written consent of the Emerald Society
of Illinois.
Vietnam Memorial Wall
The Vietnam Memorial Wall will be coming to Merrionette Park, 119th Street & South Kedzie
Ave. The opening ceremony will be at noon on 13 Jun 08. The regulations of the Traveling Wall
are that Law Enforcement Officers must be on scene as security when the Wall is erected. The
Wall should be erected as of 1800 hrs on 12 Jun and will be up until 0600 on Monday 16 Jun.
Volunteers are needed to act as security for the Wall during these hours in six hour shifts. (1800
– 2400 – 0000 – 0600, etc).
If you are interested in volunteering a shift, please contact Tom Cody via his mobile number
(708) 214-6394 for an assignment. This will be a plain clothes detail. Just wear something to
indicate that you are the Police.
Band Membership Drive
The Pipes & Drums of the Emerald Society will have an orientation night on Thursday, 19 Jun
08 at the Timothy J. O’Connor Training Academy, 1300 West Jackson Blvd. For those interested
in joining the Band, stop by to observe what we do, ask questions and find out what we are all

Condolence
We would like to send our condolences to Bob Lanning and Tim Burns who both lost their
mothers recently. Our condolences also go out to Thomas Toolis on the death of his wife, Jamele
F. Toolis. Tom’s brother is Past President Rick Toolis.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.
Retirement
Congratulations to Mike Patton of the Chicago Police Department who retired as Deputy
Chief of Area 3 after 35 years of service. Mike was commander of Midway and O’Hare Airports,
Commander of the Deployment Operations Center, Captain at the 15th Dist. Lieutenant at
the 13th Dist, Sgt in Area 5 Detective Division and patrolman in the Intelligence Section and
numerous districts. Mike has also been detailed to the FBI, DEA and Secret Service Task Force.
Congratulations on your many years of dedicated service.
