A letter from the President

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. Let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas, which is the birth of Jesus Christ our savior. The goal of the Emerald Society is the promotion of Irish culture. Please remember our ancestors and relatives who fought and died to preserve our “Irish Culture” and our Catholic faith.

We have held several events since the last news letter and I want to tell you about them. The Scholarship drawing was on Sept. 14th. The winners of the five $500.00 scholarships were: The daughter of Joseph Donnally, Marty Shaunaghesy, son of Mike Shaughnessy, Christopher Garrity, son of Patrick Garrity, Claire Moriarty, daughter of Kevin Moriarty and Brendon Howard, son of Jack Howard.

The 2009 Dinner Dance was held on Friday, September 25, at White Eagle Banquets in Niles, IL. This year’s recipient of “Irishman of the Year” award was Thomas J. Dart, Sheriff of Cook County. “Police Officers of the Year” were Sgt. Charles “Greg” Daly, Chicago Police Department, Sgt. Clinton Sebastian, Chicago Police Department and P.O. Donna Walsh, Chicago Police Department. Entertainment was provided by our very own Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Dept, Dillon-Gavin School of traditional Irish Dance and DJ “DINO G” provided music for our dancing pleasure.  We would like to thank band manager Jon Harmening, The Dillon-Gavin school of Irish Dance and Dino the DJ for their time. Dino is a P.O. with the Franklin Park PD who donated his services for the evening. The event was exciting, not only because of this year’s awardees, but also because of our new venue at the White Eagle. We were able to lower the ticket price and there was plenty of free parking. We are looking forward to working with the White Eagle in the future.

Due to the observance of Columbus Day the Oktoberfest meeting was held on Monday October 5th. The meeting was held at the FOP hall. We served plenty of sausage and other German delights and want to thank Tom Cody and Rick Toolis and all of their helpers for a wonderful evening.  We also had live traditional music provided by Finbar (Barry) Fagan for your listing pleasure. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success.

The Chicago Patrolman’s Federal Credit Union held their grand opening on Nov 5, 2009. The new facility is located at 1407 W. Washington Blvd, right across the street from their old building.  They held a lovely reception and it was highlighted by a few words from CEO Scott Arney and a performance by the Pipes and Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Department. We want to congratulate Scott and all of the CPFCU employees who worked so hard to make the event possible. We would also like thank Dave Dunham for his loyal support of all the Emerald Society events. We encourage our members to patronize the credit union for all of your banking needs. They have three locations to serve you throughout Chicago.

The November Turkey Raffle was held on Monday Nov 16 at Assumption Church. A full Turkey dinner was served, just like mom would make. We would like to thank Tom Cody, Rick Toolis, John L. Sullivan and Meg Flisk and all of their helpers who made the event possible. We awarded twenty-five $20.00 gift certificates for Jewel to the winners of the turkey raffle, to purchase their turkeys. Our four cash prize winners were Dan Envoy $300.00, John D. Burke $150.00, Fallon Family $100.00 and Nick DiMaggio, $50.00.

In closing, I would like to thank the Board Members who gave their time and supported the Emerald Society financially over my reign as president. It is not one person who makes the organization successful. Its our members and dedicated Board of Directors. I would especially like to thank the First Vice-President, Debbie O’Connor-DiMaggio for her all her help over the past two years. I wish the new Board Members success in their future events and I think that you will see some welcome changes. I still plan on being involved with the Board, as past president.

I am a lifetime board member. I will also remain as chairman for the 2010 golf outing.

Is mise le meas,

Patrick J. Moriarty
President

Chicago Police Basketball Team Scholarship

A scholarship was secured by Dave Dunham and Scott Arney of the CPFCU through the CPD Basketball team.  Every year the team holds a basketball tournament at the Moody Bible Institute.  The proceeds of the event are donated to a police organization in the form of a scholarship.  The winner was based on the family that sold the most Turkey Raffle tickets.  As you know the money from the Turkey Raffle funds our scholarships that we give away every year.  The winner of the “Special Scholarship” was Grace Moriarty, daughter of Bill Moriarty.  We would like to thank the CPD Basketball team and coach Keith Anderson as well as Scott Arney and Dave Dunaham of the CPFCU for their commitment to help police organizations.

St. Patrick’s Day, 2010

Our St. Patrick’s Day meeting is scheduled for Saturday March 13th.   The 2010 St. Patrick’s Day Parade will mark the 35th anniversary of the Emerald Society of Illinois.  We are looking forward to having some special guest at the parade.  Fergal Murray the brew master for Guinness requested to march with us on that day.  We told him that it would be our pleasure to have him with us.  The Emerald Society of the Metropolitan Police Service (of London) will also be marching with us that day.  The MPS formed their own Emerald Society in 2005 and will be celebrating their 5th anniversary.  The MPS Emerald Society goal is the same as ours, “the promotion of  Irish Culture”. We would like to remind everyone that the meeting is for members and their guest only.  You will be required to show identification at the entry.  We will have a new venue for the 2010 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  The event will be at the Operating Engineers, Local 399 hall which is located at 2260 S. Grove St which is just west of Canal and south of Cermak on the Chicago River.  We are excited about our new venue.  They have a parking lot with over 240 parking spots and street parking without meters.  The facility is only a few years old and should meet all of our needs.   The admission for the 2009 meeting was $30.00 for adults 21 and over, $15.00 for adults under 21 and children 12 and under are free.  We hope to maintain the 2009 prices for the 2010 parade.  Please show your Irish American pride by marching proudly in your department uniform.  As I was reminded by one of our members, it’s the only day that you are cheered walking down the street.  Consult future newsletters or our website for updates on the parade.

Golf Outing 2010

The golf outing will be held on Monday, July 12th, 10:00AM,  at the Carriage Greens Country Club, Darien IL.  The cost for this year’s outing is $125.00 per golfer or $500.00 per foursome.  If you or someone you know would like to sponsor a hole at the outing, or would like to make a donation for the outing, contact Patrick Moriarty at 847-772-0709 or kathiejebeling@comcast.net .  Feel free to contact Patrick Moriarty if you need further information or reservations.

A Bit of Good News

In 1972 Hillside P.O. Anthony Raymond was killed by three offenders after a traffic stop.  The officer was kidnapped and his body was found ten months later buried in upper Wisconsin in a 55 gallon drum.  Two of the offenders were arrested, while the third had already met with his demise.  Over the years you have helped his sister who is a  member of the Emerald Society, Maryann Blair by signing petitions to keep the savage cold blooded murders in jail.  On Nov 11th Maryann was informed that Silas Fletcher died in prison.
