The children’s Christmas party was held on Saturday 13 Dec. and attended by over 30 children.
Kevin Barry had his train display and we had a magic show and arts and crafts for the children. We would like to thank Kathie Flannery and her helper for decorating the church basement and coordinating the event. We would also like to thank our board members, Tim Burns, Tom Cody, Rick Toolis, Mark Rue and Bob Shoup for their assistance.The Chili Cook-Off was held on January 12 at Assumption Church. The meeting was well attended and 8 members entered the chili cook-off. First place prize of $100.00 went to
Maryellen Lester, wife of Jay Lester who is with the Cook County Forest Preserve PD. Second place prize of $75.00 went to Terry Agonath who is a retired member from the Lake County Sheriff’s Dept and the third place prize of $50.00 went to Kathie Flannery our Children’s event coordinator. The entrance fee for the contest was $5.00, so if you think you make the best chili, enter the contest next year. We would also like to thank the participants and those who served as judges, Chef Hans Aeschbacher of Smith and Wollensky, Bill Foley of the E.S. Pipes and Drums and our special guest judge “Deb”. Special thanks go to Maryellen Lester who donated her first place prize of $100.00 to the Emerald Society.The awards night was held on Monday February 9
th at Assumption Church. We gave out four Life Saving Awards and fourteen Certificates of Excellence. The awardees were Harold Bone, Mike Brosnan, Dave Mullany and Bill Moriarty from the 016th Dist. Awards were also awarded to Sgt. Dan Shine, Bob Shoup, Jerry Crisp, Thomas Dudzik, Mahmoud Haleem, Edward Johnson, Ryan Ladd, Daniel O’Connor, William Wagner and K-9 Rex.The board of directors has decided to stop mailing newsletters to member whose dues are in arrears by two or more years. We are also stepping up our efforts to send the newsletters out via e-mail. This will give us the ability to send out reminders of the monthly meetings and cut down the cost of mailing out the newsletters. We need your authorization to send the news letter electronically. To give us your permission, please be sure to include your e-mail address in the renewal notice and mark the line that says I want to receive correspondence via e-mail. If you have already renewed your 2009 dues, please mail or bring the renewal form to the next meeting.
I would also like to point out some of the important information included in this newsletter, such as the information on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and to remind you that the party is for members and their guest only! There is also information on a documentary that is on the Irish in Chicago that will air in March.

Unit Representatives
We a looking for volunteers to serve as department or Unit/Dist representatives. Representatives can serve on different watches in the districts and units. The reps will have their entrance fee waived for meetings that they attend. If you are interested please contact
Marty Quill at 847-613-7047.The 2009 St. Patrick’s Day party will be held on Saturday March 14th and will be considered the March general meeting.
The St. Patrick’s Day party is for members and their guest only. Be prepared to show your membership card. The party will be held at the Galleria Marchetti located at 825 W. Erie St. in Chicago. The Galleria is located just north of the Ohio St. feeder ramp, south of Ogden Ave between Milwaukee Ave and Halsted St. Food will be provided by O’Connor’s Unforgettable Edibles. The cost for admission is $20.00 for uniformed officers and federal agents marching in proper attire, $30.00 for adults and non uniformed officers and $15.00 for persons under 21. Children 12 and under are free. The parade steps off at noon on Columbus Drive north of Roosevelt Rd. We will not know our parade number or staging area until days before the parade. Transportation will be provided to and from the parade route. We will muster at the Galleria Marchetti when the doors open at 10:30AM. Wrist bands will be on sale in the morning and also at the parade route. We strongly recommend that you purchase the wrist band in the morning or at the parade route to avoid waiting in long lines. Wrist band holders will have a separate entrance at the Galleria. Parking is at a premium in this area!Valet parking service will be available for the day at a reasonable cost and is highly recommended. The surrounding area has recently had parking meters installed so parking may be difficult that day if you don’t use the valet. Please check the web site a few days prior to the event for updated information:

No one will be allowed to remain at the Galleria during the parade.Doors will open to the public after the first bus load of uniformed marchers arrives at the Galleria. The marching order for the day will be Uniformed Officers followed by Federal Agents marching in proper attire. Following them will be civilian dress members and their families. All members and guest marchers are reminded that there will be
no drinking of alcohol in the staging area or while marching in the parade. If anyone feels the need to drink alcohol during this time they will not be allowed to march. Do not embarrass yourself or the Emerald Society. The Northwest side parade will be on Sunday March 8
th and steps off at 11am. The South Side Parade will be on Sunday March 15th and steps off at Noon. Band manager Jon Harmening invites our member to march with them in either parade.FOP St. Patrick’s Party
The FOP Lodge 7 will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party on Saturday March 14
th at the FOP hall at 1412 W. Washington Blvd. Chicago, IL. The party hours are 1800 to 2300 hrs. The admission price is $20.00 per-person and includes Harrington’s corned beef, open bar and live entrainment. If you plan on attending the FOP party please keep your Emerald Society wrist band on, and your admission price is only $10.00. Wrist bands that are not intact or off the wrist will not be honored.The April meeting, which is our “traveling meeting” will be held on Monday April 20
th at Lanigans Pub located at 3111 W 111th Street. We will have a drink special, $2.00 domestics, $3.00 Imports and $3.50 for pints. We will also have an appearance by the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Department. They recently returned from their mid-west St. Patrick’s Day tour and can’t wait to perform on their home turf. We encourage new and prospective members to attend as always. Free parking is available across from Lanigans next to the fire house.The children’s sports night will be on Monday, May 11
th at Assumption Church at 1900 hrs. We have contacted several Chicago area sports teams and personalities and are hopeful that we will have special guests in attendance to help distribute the sporting goods. We also hope to have Tom Sheehy at our May meeting. Tom is the Games Development Administrator with the Gaelic Athletic Association for the Chicago area and would like our help to promote Gaelic Games among our members' children. The Chicago Youth Development Committee will conduct a Spring Irish Football Tournament highlighting Irish youth sports. The March tournament will be held on Sunday, March 29th from 10:30 AM until dusk at Gaelic Park, 6119 W 147th Street, Oak Lawn, IL. Gaelic football and hurling are the national sports of Ireland.There are over two hundred kids that play Gaelic games in the Chicago land area. The history of Irish in Chicago is a remarkable eighty-minute documentary that celebrates the rich history of Chicago’s powerful Irish community. From the days of Chicago’s founding in the 1830’s, the City has been a final stop for people journeying from all over the world looking for a land of opportunity. Irish Chicago tells the story of Irish immigrants who worked in factories, became leaders in politics, as well as those who made significant contributions to the city’s growing cultural life.Through the use of historical footage, archival photos and the stories from a core group of contemporary Chicagoans, Irish Chicago presents a springboard back into Chicago’s rich history to show the role the Irish played in building this great city. The NCLEES will be awarding four $500.00 scholarships to eligible students. Students must be presently in their senior year of High School and planning to attend College on a full time basis or must be presently attending College and planning to continue to attend College on a full time basis for the 2009-2010 school year. Students must be the child of an active member in good standing of any organization that is itself in good standing as a member of NCLEES. Only one application will be accepted per individual student, however, more than one student per family may submit an application. Applications must be received by May 1, 2008.
Prior year recipients are ineligible for the scholarship. The scholarship will be chosen on a lottery basis at the May NCLEES meeting. The winner will be notified by the member organization and will be asked to show proof of attendance at schools that applicants states. Please send the applications to: Lou Walker/NCLEES P.O. The following information must be included in your application: Members Name, Members Organization, Students Name, Address, Present School Attending, High School Senior, College Year and School Planning to Attend.

We would also like to remind our members, family and friends to refrain from wearing any apparel with our name or logo on it that brings discredit or is an embarrassment to the Emerald Society of Illinois. We would like to remind all our members that when they are wearing Emerald Society of Illinois apparel that they are representing the Emerald Society of Illinois. All apparel with our name or logo on it must be authorized by the Emerald Society of Illinois or the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society. The members and board of directors send their condolences to the following members and friends: Past President Rick Toolis and brother Tom on the death of their sister Catherine Toolis who passed away on Dec 15. Catherine was a crossing guard for the Chicago Police Department.
Eddie Swiss of Chicago Beverage Systems passed away Dec 5, Eddie was instrumental in securing sponsorship for our St. Patrick’s Day Parade and also established a long time relationship with CBS who distributes Miller, Heineken and other products in the Chicagoland area. The family of Mel Loftus who passed away in January. Mel served as recording secretary of the Chicago Plumbers Union, Local 130. Mel was a true friend and supporter of the Emerald Society and Irishmen of the Year in 1995. Our condolences to his daughter Margo and her husband Tom Lyons who are also supporters of the Emerald Society and to Larry Nowak and Tom Cody who were very close to Mel.
